Bio: Allen Joseph Ellender (b. Sept. 24, 1890, Montegut, La.-d. July 27, 1972, Bethesda, Md.), a U.S. Senator from Louisiana, graduated from the Tulane University law school and was admitted to the bar in 1913. He served as a sergeant in the Artillery Corps, U.S. Army, during the First World War. He was a member of the State House of Representatives from 1924 to 1936, acting as floor leader and as speaker. He was elected as a Democrat to the U.S. Senate, serving from 1937 until his death in 1972. He served as President pro tempore of the Senate and chairman of several committees including Appropriations.
