Bio: George Armistead Smathers (b. Nov. 14, 1913, Atlantic City, N.J.-d. Jan. 20, 2007, Indian Creek Village, Fla.), a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator from Florida, graduated from the University of Florida law school in 1938. During World War II he served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1942 to 1945. He was elected as a Democrat to two terms in the Congress, serving from 1947 to 1951, and was elected to the Senate, serving three terms from 1951 to 1969.
