Bio: George S. McGovern was born on July 19, 1922 in Avon, South Dakota. He served in the following capacities: professor of history and political science, Dakota Wesleyan University, 1949 to 1953; executive secretary, South Dakota Democratic Party, 1953 to 1955; U.S. Congress, representative from South Dakota, 1956 to 1960; director of Food for Peace Program and special assistant to President John F. Kennedy, 1961 to 1962; U.S. Senator from South Dakota, 1963 to 1981; chairman for the Senate Select Committee on Nutrition and Human Needs, 1968 to 1977; president of Middle East Policy Council; and U.S. representative to various United Nations agencies and conferences. McGovern received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2000.
